Following in the footsteps of a ban recently passed in New Orleans, the city of Sulphur. has passed a smoking ban that will take the ashtrays out of bars and casinos in the southwestern Louisiana city. The ban also extends to parks where children frequent.

The city’s smoke free air ordinance was amended with a unanimous vote during Monday’s city council meeting to include bars and casinos, as well as include electronic cigarettes and vaping devices. The new law requires that smokes must be at least 25 feet away from the main entrance to a building and five feet away from any other entrances.

The law states smokers must be 25 feet away from the main entrance of the building and five feet away from the secondary entrance. The changes will go into effect in 30 days but a 60 day grace period has been granted to give businesses time to apply for variances. Enforcement will be handled by the city’s police department, according to KPLC-TV.

Sulphur is located about 200 miles west of New Orleans near the Texas border and has a population of just over 20,000 residents.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
