Next month, Muga Inc., the company owned by Sanjay Patel of Sanj’s Smoke Shop in Bloomfield, N.J., will be releasing the second blend in its SP1014 line, and it’s being made by Eladio Diaz.

The SP1014 Black uses a Dominincan wrapper, a barrel-aged Mexican San Andrés binder, and an undisclosed mix of five different fillers. It is being offered in four sizes, all of which will come in five-count packs:

  • SP1014 Black 5 x 50 — $9 (Pack of 5, $45)
  • SP1014 Black 5 x 54 — $10 (Pack of 5, $50)
  • SP1014 Black 6 x 54 — $11 (Pack of 5, $55)
  • SP1014 Black 7 x 54 — $12 (Pack of 5, $60)

As for production, Patel told halfwheel that the line will be made in ongoing production, but limited to 300,000 cigars per size each year. The cigars will launch on Jan. 7 at Sanj’s Smoke Shop but will also be available to a limited number of retailers, like the original SP1014 Love n’Passion that debuted in January 2022, he is limiting it to approximately 50 stores. The cigars will be available both in the U.S. and in international markets, though cigars in non-U.S. markets will wear bands with a black background as opposed to one that uses white boxes.

As for the original SP1014 Love n’Passion, which is made at Tabacalera Jurarip in Tamboril, Dominican Republic and features a red-trimmed band, Patel said that production on that line is also increasing to 300,000 cigars per year, per size, with plans to add five more retailers that carry the cigars.

The SP1014 gets its name from Sanj Patel’s initials and birthday.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
