Southern Draw Cigars has announced its newest core line, Morning Glory, which will be coming to stores in early 2023, though will get an early release through Cigars International in two sizes that won’t be part of the regular release.

The blend features a Connecticut-grown claro wrapper that is light in color, while the binder is a Nicaraguan-grown habano hybrid and the filler is made up of Nicaraguan corojo 99 and criollo 98. In a press release, the company said that it used six tobaccos to create its gentlest blend, “resulting in an incomparable brown butter flavor somewhere between subtly toasty and elegantly nutty while remaining classically smooth, intentionally delivering a medium intensity that will be easy for most to enjoy.”

As with all of Southern Draw’s offerings, it is made at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua S.A. in Estelí.

It is offered in three sizes:

  • Southern Draw Morning Glory Rothschild (4 3/4 x 50)
  • Southern Draw Morning Glory Short Churchill (6 1/2 x 48)
  • Southern Draw Morning Glory Diadema (6 3/4 x 52)

Each size will be offered in 10-count boxes, with the “Heavenly Blue” color scheme of the boxes and multi-color cigar bands were carefully chosen by Sharon Holt, to embody the morning glory blooms and its climbing green vines.

Pricing has been announced as being between $12.49 and $13.99 per cigar. The company said it will produce 180,000 cigars per year.

“The blend is a beautiful token of our daily appreciation to our SDC family that have not previously been honored,” said Robert, Sharon and Ethan Jacob Holt via a press release. “Despite their financial investments and collective patient dedication of our continued growth, all have remained quietly offstage but just behind the drawn curtain. A very public thank you to Auntie M, Brendan and Paula, Ellen, Sean, Mark and Julie, George and Kim, Michelle, Kyle, Kris, Larry, Dan O, Tom, Amy, Pat, Zac and Courtney, Mike, and Mike Jr.,” they added.

As for the two sizes going to Cigars International, they will be a 6 1/2 x 46 lonsdale and a 6 3/4 x 52 box-pressed perfecto. The cigars are included in the retailer’s CIGARfest deluxe package, which is currently on sale.

As with the majority of Southern Draw’s other lines, the Morning Glory gets its name from a flowering plant; in this case, the morning glory plant gets its name from the fact that it blooms in the early morning before closing in the mid-afternoon. Each bloom only opens once, as it produces seeds and the vine produces only new flowers for the following morning. “Each bloom, and in our case, each cigar is a symbol of hope and the fresh start we embrace with each new sunrise that is granted,” the company wrote in a press release.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
