The Wilmington City Council could vote on a new smoking ban this Thursday that would prohibit citizens from lighting up in city parks, playgrounds and bus shelters.

Last week, the council’s Health, Aging and Disabilities Committee approved plans to expand the city’s existing smoking ban to include more areas and give police more areas where they can ticket violators with a citation that comes with a fine of up to $100. Wilmington currently has a fairly standard smoking ban, banning smoking in the majority of places of public employment, with exemptions for retail tobacco stores, taprooms and taverns, private membership organizations and rooms used for private function.

The proposal comes mainly out of the urge to reduce second-hand smoke in parks, according to what Councilman Bob Williams told WDEL-AM. Williams is the primary sponsor of the bill and said that while he intends to bring the issue to the council on Thursday, there could be an administrative issue regarding signage in non-smoking areas that would force him to delay the proceedings.

The city has not posted Thursday’s agenda as of yet, though WDEL-AM reports that it could be a part of the council’s regular meeting.

Wilmington is home to just under 72,000 residents.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
