Smoking Ban Comes to Mountain Brook, Ala. Today

A new smoking ban is coming to the Birmingham, Ala. suburb of Mountain Brook today, as smoking is now prohibited in the majority of public spaces and workplaces.

Private clubs, cigar bars and retail tobacco stores garnered an exemption from the ban, as did private residences and what is dubbed “outdoor private property.” The new ban primarily applies to restaurants and other businesses that provide smoking areas for customers.

Violators of the ban will be subject to fines ranging from $25 to $100, while business operators who allow smoking will face fines starting at $100 that can climb to $500 for three or more violations in a year.

Mountain Brook is home to just over 20,000 residents and is located approximately five miles southeast of Birmingham.
