Over a year after being brought on board as one of Camacho’s brand ambassadors, Rob Weiss will get his own cigar company. A year ago, we broke the news that Weiss was working with Camacho to develop his own line, at the time tentatively called Standard Issue. The line is now official and will be the debut release of BG Meyer Co., a new company owned by Weiss.
Weiss is a producer best known for his work on HBO’s Entourage, where he also served as a writer. He served a similar role on How to Make It in America and is currently an executive producer for a new series entitled Ballers, set to debut on HBO later this year. His partnership with Davidoff’s Camacho brand started last year when he became a member of Camacho’s Board of Bold which includes legendary football coach Mike Ditka and jewelry designer Matt Booth. All three have their own brands, all made at AgroIndustrias Laepe S.A., the factory home to Camacho.
Standard Issue is a Nicaraguan puro with a habano wrapper, binder from Estelí and fillers from Estelí, Jalapa and Ometepe. It will be offered in five sizes—Churchill (7 x 48, $9.00), Figurado (6 1/8 x 54), Gordo (6 x 60, $10), Robusto (5 x 50, $8) and Toro (6 x 50, $8.50). All will come in boxes of 20.
“The journey to find success in the entertainment industry is marked by many failures and fewer successes,” said Weiss in a press release. “It’s important to find happiness in the process. The same can be said for the cigar business. I have enjoyed the process of making these, almost as much as I have enjoyed smoking them. In the creation of cigars and stories there are similarities. You want your audience to feel fulfilled and fall in love. Whether it’s with a character who will influence their life, or a cigar that will accompany it.”
The line will begin shipping to “select markets” on June 30 with a full launch scheduled at the 2014 IPCPR convention and trade show in mid-July. Like Room101 and Ditka, the cigars will be distributed Davidoff.
