Prescott, Ariz. Passes Parks Smoking Ban

A parks smoking ban got the approval of the Prescott City Council on Tuesday night, and while it includes a provision for designated smoking areas, it might be a while before those show up.

The council approved the ban by a 6-1 vote according to a report by DCourier.com, with it set to go into effect in 30 days. However, with the city currently under Stage 1 fire restrictions due to an extended dry spell, all smoking in parks has been prohibited as a way to mitigate potential fires. Those restrictions are not expected to be lifted until later in the summer, when the area begins to receive steady rainfall from monsoons.

Once the restrictions are lifted, the duty of designating smoking areas will fall to the director of recreation services. As has been the concern with similar bans in other cities, enforcement was brought up in the meeting, with Chief of Police Debora Black saying that the new ban would not be heavily enforced by her department, calling for park users to voluntarily comply with the ban. The city’s volunteer park rangers will also be empowered to cite violators, who could face a civil sanction or citation.

Prescott is located approximately 100 miles north of Phoenix and is home to roughly 42,500 residents.
