Selected Tobacco S.A. did not attend the 2021 PCA Convention & Trade Show, but the company has no dearth of new releases it is showing off to interested parties this year.

While talking to Oliver Nivaud, director of operations at United Cigars—which distributes Selected Tobacco S.A. in the U.S. market—he told me that pricing has not been finalized on many of the new releases and also mentioned the names of a few creations that the company is planning on releasing in 2023. These include the Nelson brand—named after the company’s founder, Nelson Alfonso—the Alfonso Grand Seleccion line and various ashtrays.

A few words instantly popped into my mind when I saw the brand new Selected Tobacco S.A. booth at this year’s PCA Convention & Trade Show: grandiose, expensive, elegant. It is huge inside and out, and has plenty of room not only to show off the various releases, humidors and ashtrays; it also has a few different meeting spaces, a private office and plenty of room for people to move around. I have always thought that Selected Tobacco S.A. has some of the more impressive packaging in the industry across a number of lines—including Atabey and Byron—and the booth does a great job of showing that off.

I have been smoking cigars for over eight years. A documentary wedding photographer by trade, I spent seven years as a photojournalist for the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star Telegram. I started the cigar blog SmokingStogie in 2008 after realizing that there was a need for a cigar blog with better photographs and more in-depth information about each release. SmokingStogie quickly became one of the more influential cigar blogs on the internet, known for reviewing preproduction, prerelease, rare, extremely hard-to-find and expensive cigars. I am a co-founder of halfwheel and now serve as an editor for halfwheel.
