Casa Turrent, the Mexican cigar maker and tobacco grower, returned to the PCA Convention & Trade Show as part of the Sutliff booth, as Sutliff distributes Casa Turrent in the United States. As you might have seen with other companies in the Sutliff booth, that meant a black bookcase where the company’s products were displayed, and this year it was quite a colorful display.

Alejandro Turrent is giving the packaging of his cigars a makeover to try and spur sales in the U.S., moving away from the standard wood boxes that looked the same across the company’s 1880 Serie and letting each blend shine with its own glossy box.

Beyond that, there’s a new limited production cigar for the Serie 1880 line, which draws on a previous limited edition but modifies the blend and vitola for this new release.

Casa Turrent Serie 1880 Edición Limitada

The company is adding a limited production release to its Serie 1880 line, and it features the same blend that was used in a cigar known as the Casa Turrent Sui Generis, which was originally released in a 6 1/4 x 52 toro vitola. Now it gets beefier, with all of the tobaccos aged for at least eight years including a Havana-San Andrés hybrid seed tobacco used in the blend as well as two distinct types of San Andrés tobacco. While the box says it is a limited edition, Alejandro Turrent said that production will be ongoing but limited, as opposed to the total run of cigars being fixed at a certain number.

Casa Turrent Serie 1880 – New Packaging

The Casa Turrent Serie 1880 lines are getting some flashy new packaging, as the company is moving away from the plain wood boxes to these high-gloss versions where the color of the box will match the color of the band. The robusto vitola will be the first to make the switch, with other vitolas following along in the near future. Of note about these boxes, in addition to the high gloss finish, they also use a metal plate on the lid that is made by the same Hungarian company that makes badging—including the famous shield—for Porsche vehicles. The Casa Turrent Serie 1880 line is made up of several core line blends: Claro, Colorado, Maduro, Oscuro, Doble Maduro, Doble Claro and Rosado. The change in packaging is also bringing about a price increase, though the change in packaging is not the sole driver of the increase. In the case of the robusto, the MSRP will increase from $16.20 to $18 per cigar.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
