Casa Cuevas is one of a handful of companies with a new booth design this year, an eye-catching setup with an angular look, complemented by a trio of display cases showing off the company’s new offering, the Sangre Nueva.

If you’ve been following the news about Casa Cuevas in the past year or so, you will have noticed that Alec Cuevas has become a more visible part of the company. In 2019, a fifth medal was added to the company’s packaging to recognize that he had officially joined his father and grandfather in the business, becoming the fifth generation of the family to work in the tobacco business. In January 2020, he was named the company’s director of operations, in 2021 he and his father, Luis, blended the Patrimonio line in honor of Luis Cuevas Sr., and in June 2022, was named its director of brand development.

Now, he has his own cigar, Sangre Nueva, which he blended alongside his grandfather, putting his creation front and center in the booth this year, and placing him much more in the spotlight. This was evident given how many conversations he seemed to be having as I passed by the booth, attempting to get some time with him to discuss the blend.

Casa Cuevas Sangre Nueva

Alec Cuevas, who was recently promoted to director of brand development, is behind this latest creation from Casa Cuevas, which is fitting given that the name of the cigar means new blood. He calls it medium-plus in strength with a savory blend, and says it is “a perfect representation of the gratitude I have for this one-of-a-kind industry.” While he didn’t announce it prior to the show, Cuevas revealed that the blend contains a very small amount—about two percent of the total filler—of Kentucky fire cured tobacco.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
