Pasadena, Calif. Approves First Reading of Flavored Tobacco Products Ban

While California waits to see if voters will give the go-ahead to a statewide flavored tobacco ban as part of the November 2022 ballot, a number of cities have taken it upon themselves to pass their own versions of the ban. The latest to do so is Pasadena, which passed the first reading of an ordinance that will amend its existing tobacco laws to ban the sale of any flavored tobacco products and bring it inline with the proposed changes at the state level.

The proposal passed unanimously during the city council’s meeting on Monday night, and will notably prohibit the sale of mentholated cigarettes. As currently written, there are no exemptions in the ordinance, which specifically mentions electronic smoking devices, flavored hookah, flavored little cigars and what are referred to as tobacco look-alike products.

The ban does not prohibit the use of such products within the city, however. As currently written, the ban will go into effect 30 days after its passage and publication.

Pasadena is home to just over 141,000 residents.
