Ernesto Padilla is going high-end with a future cigar release, the 1932 Seleccion Especial.
He recently posted a picture of the wine-crate style box that the cigars will come in to his Instagram account, noting that the cigars inside will retail for $50 each but saying little else about them.
He didn’t go into many specifics in an email to halfwheel, but he did say the cigar is made with well-aged tobacco and is being made at a small factory by only two pairs of rollers. Padilla declined to say exactly when it would be released, though suggested it was being planned for release around the upcoming IPCPR Convention & Trade Show in July.
He added that it will be released in the same sizes that were used in the original Signature 1932 line, which came in five sizes:
- Padilla Signature 1932 Churchill (7 x 48)
- Padilla Signature 1932 Lancero (6 7/8 x 42)
- Padilla Signature 1932 Robusto (5 x 50)
- Padilla Signature 1932 Toro (6 x 50)
- Padilla Signature 1932 Torpedo (6 1/4 x 52)
That line was originally a Nicaraguan puro introduced in 2006 and made at the El Rey de los Habanos in Miami, with its name coming from the birth year of Ernesto’s father, Heberto Padilla, a Cuban poet and writer who became a political prisoner of the Castro regime in Cuba.
In 2008, Padilla moved production to his own factory in Miami before working with Raíces Cubanas in Honduras. The line was discontinued in 2012 but returned in early 2014 as an exclusive line for Cigars International/Meier & Dutch, which includes also the Cigar.com and Cigar Bid retail operations. It uses an Ecuadorian habano wrapper and Nicaraguan fillers from the Oliva family farms, according to Padilla.
The Padilla 1932 Oscuro, another cigar originally produced at El Rey de los Habanos, returned as a national release last year with production now moved to Raíces Cubanas.
Update (April 18, 2017) — Shortly after this article was published, Ernesto Padilla told halfwheel that the first limited run will feature one original Padilla Signature 1932 Oscuro from the 2006 production batch will be included in each box of the Padilla 1932 Seleccion Especial. “the concept is to showcase this classic blend see how it has aged,” Padilla told halfwheel.
