As of Jan. 1, smoking at parks, athletic facilities, grounds and inside city-owned facilities in San Marcos, Texas will be prohibited. Come June 1, smoking inside all buildings will be prohibited, except for tobacconists. Outdoor areas of bars and patios will also receive an exemption.

The new law makes violations a class C misdemeanor. Violators are subject to a fine of up to $200 for the first offense, $500 for a second and up to $2,000 for subsequent offenses, amongst the stiffest penalties anywhere.

San Marcos is located in central-south Texas, north of San Antonio and south of Austin. It has a population of 50,000.
