News: La Flor Dominicana Creates ‘Meaner Digger’

Null

La Flor Dominicana is taking their sizable Digger to new lengths for a store exclusive made to celebrate what many believe will be the end of the world next month.

The La Flor Dominicana Meaner Digger is a 10 x 60 barber pole that uses both Ecuadorian Sun Grown maduro and natural wrapper leaves, while the binder and filler are double ligero from the Dominican Republic. It is being made as a store exclusive for Tobacco Haven in Brookline, NH. It will be released on December 21, 2012, which is a commonly cited date for the end of the world.

Production will be limited to just 2,012 cigars, with 100 boxes of 20 cigars and one 12-count box signed by Litto Gomez that will be raffled off at the release party. Those wishing to purchase the Meaner Digger can call the store at (603) 673-1178 to be put on a waiting list. Customers attending the event will have first chance at the cigars, with the remaining cigars made available to those on the waiting list. Details of the release were announced on TravelingStogie.com.

The Digger first debuted in April 2011 as a limited release that was made in response to a customer request, and shares its name with the gentleman who told Gomez that while he loved his DL-700, that it was too short for his taste and he’d like it to be two inches longer. Gomez decided to make a small batch of these longer DL-700s and sent them to the customer before offering them to retailers.

The first batch was limited to approximately 300 boxes spread across 100 retailers, though it soon went into regular production, as we announced in June 2011.  The Digger was reviewed on halfwheel in July 2011.

UPDATE (Dec. 4, 2012): An earlier version of this story reported that there would be 200 ten-count boxes, when in fact there will be 100 20-count boxes of the Meaner Digger. MSRP is $280 per box, or $14 per cigar.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I'm a voice over artist. I previously covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
