Habanos S.A. Claims Rise in Cigar Sales

Earlier today, Ana López Garcia, the marketing head of Habanos S.A., announced that Cuban cigar sales hit $401 million in 2011, a 9% rise from 2010.

The announcement at the Festival del Habano XIV, the annual Cuban cigar festival, is not terribly surprising despite Imperial Tobacco Ltd.’s January financial report that indicated a 10.3% decline in revenue for the same year. Imperial Tobacco Ltd., the parent of Altadis S.A., owns half of Habanos S.A.

Last month’s financial statements indicated a near doubling of after-tax profits, despite the over 10% decline in revenue.
