The legal battle over El Rey de los Habanos is over. Shortly before trial was set to begin, the long-rumored settlement has materialized. Details are unsurprisingly unavailable, but the following statement was obtained from the firm (Dorta y Ortega) representing Pepín García:
This email is being written on behalf of Mr. Omar Ortega. This email is to inform you that the dispute between Mr. Fernandez and the Garcia Family has been resolved. The parties have amicably resolved all disputes and have agreed to end their business relationships. Jose “Pepin” Garcia has acquired full ownership of El Rey de Los Habanos, Inc. and of Tabacalera Cubana de Garcia y Fernandez, S.A. (“Tacuba”).
For those unaware, Eduardo Fernandez of AGANORSA had sued the García family over various alleged wrongdoings at El Rey de los Habanos Inc, a company Fernandez held a 50% stake in. The lawsuit was filed last August and we broke the story this past May, which you can read here.
It’s important to note that the statement indicates that the Tabacalera Cubana S.A. dissolution has also been resolved, as that was a separate legal matter in Nicaraguan courts over the other partnership between the Garcías and Fernandez.
There have been rumors of a settlement for the past two months, although the financials have varied greatly. There is no word if the non-legal differences have been settled, the Garcías stopped using AGANORSA tobacco in 2006. — el niño diablo.
