On Wednesday, the Newark Municipal Council will hold a public hearing on a proposed extension of the city’s smoking ban which would ban smoking at parks.

If passed, the proposed law would fine violators $250 for the first offense, $500 for the second and $1,000 for each additional offense. In addition, the new law would extend the city’s smoking ban at senior facilities, city-owned cars and community centers. Also, smoking would be prohibited within 50 feet of any banned place, an extension from the 25 feet in the current law.

Newark is New Jersey’s largest city with a population over 275,000.
