New York Banning Smoking in State-Owned Parks and Beaches
On Friday, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a bill into law that will make it illegal to smoke at state-owned parks, beaches and other recreational areas, including marinas and boardwalks.
“Smoking is a dangerous habit that affects not only the smoker but everyone around them, including families and children enjoying our state’s great public places,” Hochul said in a statement. “I’m proud to sign this legislation that will protect New Yorker’s health and help reduce litter in public parks and beaches across the state.”
There are some exceptions to the ban, notably for the Adirondack and Catskill parks, as well as sidewalks immediately adjoining parks and pedestrian routes that are adjacent to vehicular traffic.
The law will go into effect in 90 days, and once it does, violators will be subject to a $50 fine.
