Last week, the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners could have voted to ban smoking in public parks and recreation areas, instead, they didn’t even hold a vote.

Support for the measure was said to come from public complaints, but Commissioners didn’t even vote on, let alone support a measure that they say would have infringed on smoker’s rights. In addition to objections from the Commissioners, Police Chief Dale Watson said he did not believe he had enough officers to actually enforce a law against smoking in public areas.

Mount Airy is located in Surry County along the Virginia border in the northwestern part of the state. It has a population of around 10,000.
