The newest extension to Habanos S.A.’s Montecristo marca, the Linea 1935, is slated to get its worldwide release next month following a launch event in Spain.

Daymi Difurniao, the director of marketing operations for Habanos S.A., confirmed to halfwheel that the cigar will get its official release on April 16, though no further details were immediately available. Following that launch, the three-vitola, full strength line will begin to be made available in other markets.

The Montecristo Linea 1935 debuted at the XIX Festival del Habano, held in February 2017, with Habanos S.A. referring to it as a complement to the medium to full strength flavour of the Línea Clásica and Línea Edmundo and the medium strength flavour of the Línea Open blend.

Each of the three sizes are offered in 20-count boxes, which offer a unique design for the Habanos portfolio, marked by a Carmelite lacquer finish and beveled edges:

Much like the marca’s name, two of the three vitolas come from Alexandre Dumas’ famous 1844 novel, The Count of Monte Cristo; Dumas refers to the last name of the novel’s author, Dumas; Maltés refers to the main character’s nickname in the book, The Maltese Sailor; while Leyenda is Spanish for Legend. The Legend also shares its size with the limited edition Montecristo 80 Aniversario, which was launched in 2015 to commemorate the brand’s 80th anniversary.

As for the Linea 1935 name, it comes from the first year in which Montecristo cigars were released.

Numerous distributors confirmed to halfwheel that they are preparing for launches in their regions, including the distributors for Switzerland and Germany who said that limited amounts have begun to arrive, though several distributors said they have yet to receive any stock.

Update (April 13, 2018) — The Swiss distributor Intertabak AG has announced that the cigars will be available in La Casa del Habano shops in the country as of April 18, and in Habanos Specialist shops as of April 25. The Dumas vitola will be priced at 390 Swiss Francs (US $405) per box, the Maltés at 480 Francs ($499), and the Leyenda at 550 Francs ($571).

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
