The Minnetonka City Council has unanimously approved an increase to the minimum age to purchase tobacco products, meaning it will go from 18 to 21-years-old as of Jan. 1, 2019.
The city joins a growing list in the state to pass such an increase, including Minneapolis, Plymouth, Edina, Bloomington, Richfield and St. Louis Park. A pair of bills to raise the age statewide was introduced during the 2017-2018 legislative session but have not progressed out of committee hearings.
Minnetonka is a suburb of Minneapolis, located approximately eight miles to the west. It is home to just over 53,000 residents.
