Smoking at public beaches and parks in Maui may become a thing of the past. The Maui County Council will take up the new law after the Economic Development, Energy, Agriculture, and Recreation Committee approved the measure for a full vote last week.

If passed, Maui County, which encompasses the islands of Maui, Kahoolawe, Lānai, Molokini and parts of Molokai, would join the counties of Hawai’i, Honolulu and Oahu as places where smoking is no longer permitted at public beaches.

A statewide beach smoking ban was proposed in the Hawaii legislature earlier this year. Officials in Maui cited litter from cigarette butts as the reason for the proposed smoking ban.
