The effort to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco has made its way to Maine.

Today, L.D. 1170 was introduced, which would raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, from 18 to 21.

The bill was introduced by Sen. Davis, R-Piscataquis and is co-sponsored by Sen. Dow, R-Lincoln; Sen. Jackson, D-Aroostook; Sen. Langley, R-Hancock and Sen. Libby, D-Hancock. They are joined by Rep. Guerin, R-Glenburn; Rep. Chace, R-Durham; Rep. Golden, D-Lewiston; Rep. Hymanson, D-York and Rep. Ward, R-Dedham.

California and Hawaii are the only two states that have passed similar laws, though a variety of states have active bills that would raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco.
