Smoking will still be allowed in Lincoln County parks. Commissioners rejected a proposal that would have banned smoking over concerns regarding the ability of cigarettes and cigars to start forest fires.
In the end, two different arguments persuaded the Commission to decide otherwise. First, the proposed changes differ from federal laws regarding the forested areas that neighbor Lincoln County. Second, Joe Kenmore, the emergency service manager, testified that he had never seen a case where a cigarette or cigar started a fire in Lincoln County and indicated it would be very difficult for such an event to take place.
Lincoln County is located in central New Mexico with a population of 20,000. It claims to be the home to Smokey Bear.
