In a few weeks, the Lewes City Council was supposed to have a public hearing on a proposed extension of the city’s smoking ban to cover two beaches. That will no longer happen.

Instead, the City Council has expanded the proposed smoking ban to cover all beaches, saying that it has received enough feedback to support the additional expansion. The new public hearing is now scheduled for Nov. 24.

It’s just the latest in the months-long saga over whether to ban smoking at beaches. The city started the discussion in June, but was unable to get the matter passed over the summer. A ban regarding smoking in public parks and structures already exists.

Both, Rehoboth, Del., directly south of Lewes, and Ocean City N.J., north of Lewes, have passed laws banning smoking on beaches in 2014.

Lewes is home to just under 3,000 residents and is situated in in eastern Sussex County.
