La Flor Dominicana will be debuting a new event-only “mystery cigar” this Friday at W. Curtis Draper’s in Washington, D.C. that will be part of a year-long series of events around the country.

The cigar is a 6 1/2 x 44 Lonsdale, but the blend hasn’t been released at this time. A person familiar with the cigar said that it doesn’t compare to anything in La Flor Dominicana’s existing lineup, other than that it is full flavored.

During select La Flor Dominicana events in 2013, consumers will receive a five-pack of the new cigar with an LFD box purchase. Retailers will be able to buy the cigars twice, once with their event order and then once more after the event. The quantity available was not disclosed, and it remains to be seen how widespread this new cigar will become.

The plan is to have this new mystery cigar available throughout 2013, and then possibly repeat the program in 2014 with a new blend and a new size. There are talks that the 2013 mystery cigar could enter regular production after the current event program is up, though that remains purely speculative at this point.

Kyle Shackleton, the area manager for La Flor Dominicana who covers New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia, posted this tweet and picture of the new cigar:

Litto Gomez will be at the event at W. Curtis Draper’s Washington, DC store on Friday, February 8th from 12 noon – 6 pm. He will also be at the Bethesda, MD location on Saturday, February 9th from 12 noon – 6 pm.

Update (Feb. 7, 2013): This post on W. Curtis Draper’s blog details the purchase requirements to get the LFD Mystery Cigar. Buy five LFD cigars, get one free Mystery Cigar; buy 10 get three; buy 20 and get six. It is unknown at this time if this will be the case at other LFD Mystery Cigar events.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
