If you’re looking for a truly special cigar cutter, La Flor Dominicana appears to have just the thing for you, as today the company announced the upcoming release of the La Fleur D’or cutter at the 2019 IPCPR Convention & Trade Show.

The cutter is crafted from 18k solid gold and comes bearing eight sapphires that weight a total of 1.9ct, while the blades are made from stainless steel and feature a silhouette of Litto Gomez smoking a cigar. The company is only producing 88 of the cutters, each with an MSRP of $16,000.

Purchasing the cutter will not just get an individual a fancy new cigar accessory, but also access to some special cigars with which to use the cutter. The company says that purchasers will be part of “an elite club which will be granted the ability to purchase highly rare and limited cigars released on occasion by La Flor Dominicana exclusively to its members.”

“We wanted to create something special, something that not only the owners of these pieces will enjoy but also generations to come,” said Litto Gomez, president and founder of La Flor Dominicana, in a press release. “This is more than just a cigar cutter; it should be an heirloom,” he added, noting that his company has earned respect in the cigar world by never compromising on quality. He said that the same level of care that goes into the crafting of LFD’s cigars will go into this piece.

“I can ensure that because I myself was a jeweler for many years before I became a cigar maker, the cutters themselves will be made by my personal jeweler,” he added.

Gomez’s pre-cigar career has been well documented; in the mid 1990s, he owned a jewelry shop in Miami’s North Beach neighborhood called Pekin’s. One day just before closing time, two men came into the shop and proceeded to gag and bind Gomez’s hands and his jeweler en route to stealing some $400,000 in jewelry. The pair were never caught, and while Gomez rarely speaks of that day, when he does its with gratitude as it was what turned him to the cigar business. That chapter of his life has also gotten recognized in cigar releases, notably the La Flor Dominicana Oro, which was released in 2012.

La Flor Dominicana unveiled the first of the La Fleur D’or cutters at the 2019 Procigar Festival in the Dominican Republic as part of the event’s annual charity auction.

The company has not yet announced a shipping date for the cutters.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
