Kafie 1901 Cigars is launching a collection of six blends called the Boutique Smoke Small Batch Series.

“Our factory is really known for our core brands, Kafie 1901 Cigars & San Jerónimo Cigars, we really do not deviate much in producing new blends throughout the year,” said Dr. Gaby Kafie. “This takes things to a whole new level for us. It will give us the opportunity to create exciting and small projects, to gain consumer feedback throughout the process. In essence, we want to know what the consumers like.”

Kafie told halfwheel that the six blends are as follows:

  • Boutique Smoke Small Batch Series Ecuador Habano Natural – (5 x 50)
  • Boutique Smoke Small Batch Series Ecuador Habano Natural – (6 x 52)
  • Boutique Smoke Small Batch Series Ecuador Connecticut (6 x 52)
  • Boutique Smoke Small Batch Series Ecuador Connecticut (6 1/2 x 52 torpedo)
  • Boutique Smoke Small Batch Series Mexican San Andrés (6 x 52)
  • Boutique Smoke Small Batch Series Mexican San Andrés Maduro (6 x 52)

Kafie added that all of the blends use a Honduran binder, while the filler contains Nicaragua ligero from the country’s Jalapa and Estelí regions. While the blends are the same on paper, each has been adjusted to best match with the wrapper. They will all be long-filler and draw-tested, he said, adding that it will be the company’s most Nicaraguan cigar.

“The unique thing about this project is that when you have a cigar factory, you tend to come across small batches of tobacco which are not in sufficient quantities to really create a permanent line, nor are they in sufficient quantities to create a brand,” Kafie said. “The return on investment is just not there. So, I decided for the sake of all of us to just have fun with the project.”

Each bundle will contain 10 cigars, with each cigar having an MSRP around $5 before taxes. “We want this to be a platform where we give back and say thank you for all the support,” noting that had these been packaged as a regular cigar with boxes and bands, they would be priced between $9-$11.

Production is being limited to 2,000 cigars per release.

The cigars will be launched via BoutiqueSmoke.com, Kafie’s online storefront that was created during the pandemic that both sells directly to consumers as well as serves as a way for retailers to place their wholesale orders so that they can carry the cigars in their stores.

About the author

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I'm a voice over artist. I previously covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
