One of the handful of new companies at the 2019 IPCPR Convention & Trade Show, Nova Cigars seemed to make a fairly sizable splash with some sponsorships of the show as well as a booth that seemed to be drawing people from every angle as it was located at a fairly busy intersection of aisles. The booth was headed by Leonor “Leo” Abzaradel, the company’s ceo, and Aurelio “Ari” Riego, the brand’s president. Abzaradel joined the company in February after working with Casa de Montecristo and Nat Sherman, and has been in the cigar industry for close to 10 years across several aspects of the business. Riego was most recently an inventory and purchasing manager for the Nat Sherman Townhouse in New York City prior to joining the company last year.

The company is based out of Palm Beach, Fla., while its cigars are made at the company’s factory, Nova Cigars S.A., in the Dominican Republic. Its first cigar shipments began in February, when the company began shipping its first limited edition lines, a total of six cigars with each size getting a unique blend and flavor profile.

The company limited production of each of the six cigars to just 3,000 cigars, which are offered in 12-count boxes and were also on display in the above sampler, which retails for $169. Nova’s regular production line made its debut at the show and will be available on an ongoing basis, with shipping scheduled to begin during the first week of August.

Nova Grid Cabinet Ashtray

An interesting spin on a familiar ashtray design, this unit features two drawers for storage of accessories or whatever you desire, although it is not designed to be used as a humidor. I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
