IPCPR 2019: Colibri

Null

Colibri returned to the trade show with a booth that does a solid job showcasing its new products via large panels, with display cubes set up nearby along the periphery of the booth so that people can get a closer look at the products. Meanwhile, the interior of the booth features displays with the company’s existing products as well as a number of tables for meetings. It was located in the back half of the show floor, seemingly close to a number of other accessory companies, and while I’m not sure it was intentional, meant that retailers could essentially do the bulk of their accessory buying in half a day and without racking up steps.

While I don’t think it made any lists of things to watch at the show, I had a good bit of interest in seeing what Colibri had in store this year given that it’s the first show following the departure of Jimmy Miúdo, the company’s former creative director and marketing director, and one of the key people spearheading Colibri’s past several years of rebranding and new product releases. This year’s list included the seeming completion of one series, the release of a new humidor and some new color options for existing products.

Colibri Quasar Table Lighter

There’s been a humidor, an ashtray, a punch cutter and a desktop cutter, and finally there is a lighter, which rounds out the Colibri Quasar desktop set. The Colibri Quasar’s pyramid design comes to a triple-torch lighter with a single action ignition. The unit is two cubes tall, and the one pyramid with the Colibri logo is the one to be pushed to retract the panel over the jets, start the flow of butane and ignite the flames. It’s a metal body with non-slip rubber foot pads to prevent scratching your desk or table top, with a flame adjuster and visible fuel window on the base as well. A quick use of it in the booth reveals it’s quite a handful and has a good weight to it, but remains manageable when it comes to lighting a cigar. It’s available in black, silver, gunmetal and red.

MSRP: $150

Colibri Heritage Humidor

Just as we’re talking about completing the Quasar desktop set, Colibri unveils a new humidor that looks like Quasar but is missing the pyramid shape. It’s cedar-lined and comes with a digital hygrometer, an adjustable and magnetic humidification system, as well. While the exact number of cigars that will fit is subjective depending on whether you’re smoking lanceros or gordos, it’s about the same size as the Quasar humidor, which was listed as 125-count, though the company says the range is 105 to 125 cigars. It’s available in black, red and grey. Unlike the Quasar humidor, this is not made in partnership with Daniel Marshall.

MSRP: $495

Release Date: August 2019

Colibri Cut New Color

The Colibri Cut gets a lime green blade option, pictured in the upper left corner. It’s priced at $39 like the rest of the line.

Colibri Slide Lighter New Colors

The Colibri Slide was released at the 2016 IPCPR Convention & Trade Show, and this year it gets updates by way of three new color options, either red, blue or green on a black body. All of the mechanics stay the same, meaning a push-up ignition mechanism, slide-out and locking 7mm punch cutter, large capacity fuel tank and signature blue-tinted fuel window. The MSRP—$69—also remains the same, though a shipping date has not yet been announced.

Firebird Rogue

Colibri’s value-forward line, Firebird, adds a new single-flame lighter called the Rogue. It’s pocket-friendly, features a single action ignition, large visible fuel tank and oversized flame adjustment knob on the bottom. The black body is accented by one of four colors: clear, orange, green or blue.

MSRP: $10

About the author

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I'm a voice over artist. I previously covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
