One of the companies that we heard about several times as we walked the floor was HVC Cigars, so we decided to stop by. The booth is simple, probably the most basic we stopped by, with three easels holding product posters, display cases, and some chairs. This is effectively what many first-year companies look like.

HVC is an abbreviation for Havana City, which is where HVC’s owner, Reinier Lorenzo, is from. The company is debuting two lines of cigars, both of which use AGANORSA tobacco.

The HVC First Selection is available in three sizes: the 5 1/2 x 52 HVC-52 ($7.10), 6 x 56 HVC-56 ($7.50) and 4 1/2 x 44 HVC-44 ($6.80). All three sizes come in 20-count boxes.

The second line is called Cerro, which means hill, and is named for the Havana neighborhood in which Lorenzo grew up. Again, three sizes: 5 x 50 ($8.30), 4 1/2 x 46 ($7.80) and 6 x 54 ($8.60).

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
