IPCPR 2013: The halfwheel Guide

Null

Here it is. The biggest, most comprehensive and most exhaustive pre-show guide. This will be a fun show, an important show and a relevant one. Lots of big questions, lots of potential and a feeling in the air that the cigar industry is in a much different place than it was a year ago in Orlando, and it’s not just the humidity. There are a few trends easy to pick out, none more so that due to a plethora of issues, there far less cigar releases in the first half of 2013 than anyone thought. That changes today.

The Three Biggest Questions.

Null
  1. Royal Gold — Anyone that has asked me what I thought of the show has heard this soapbox, it’s Royal Gold. Many still don’t understand that Royal Gold is Swisher’s premium cigar company, while some do but don’t seem to care. Make no mistake about it, Royal Gold is the biggest question, most important storyline and most impactful thing happening at IPCPR. It’s not simply that Swisher, the largest cigar company in the world, is entering the premium segment, rather, Swisher, the company who has oftentimes not been on the same side of things during legislative battles, suddenly enters the premium cigar market. When you talk to people dealing with legislation for the premium segment, Swisher is oftentimes looked down upon more than the government itself. So, it’s interesting that the company is once again entering the premium space and it’s an area where you must wonder in what manner they are coming. In short, it won’t be with in—house sales, which would have been a substantial sign of commitment, but the company is entering the market in ways that just about every other new brand cannot. The marketing budget is huge, the distribution networks are varied and complex and the product line will be supported. See the next bullet point for more on Royal Gold, but remember, this is what to watch.
  2. C—Stores — There’s a new segment in the premium market—c—stores. Convenience stores have become a major market as the use of Bovedas and bags have allowed premium cigars to be sold in proper conditions in c—stores. Altadis, Drew Estate, General, Gurkha, Nat Sherman and Rocky Patel have the products and Royal Gold will be next, launching in 5,000 c—stores in the coming weeks. Alex Goldman of Royal Gold, told me that Swisher, a company who makes its living off non—premium cigars in c—stores, sees the category as completely new with lots of potential. It’s only a matter of time before more enters and I’d expect some announcements about this at the show.
  3. Enough. — We will find out how big is too big. Large ring gauges sell, there’s no point debating that, but the question is how large can they go before consumers stop purchasing. We will see a plethora of 7 x 70s, some 80 ring gauge cigars and even one well over 100 ring gauge. I expect that by the end of this show we will have a good idea of what will be the top end of the market. Furthermore, I think the NUb sizes could see a return in slightly beefier forms, while there have been plenty of 66—80 ring gauge cigars, very few have been under six inches, you have to think that’s going to change soon.

Booth Previews.

  • 262 Cigars — Clint Aaron continues his march towards total lancero world domination, as he’ll be releasing the Revere Lancero, though the cigar won’t begin shipping until Fall. It’s his second show and he’s now in two booths, signaling it’s probably been a good year for the company. — PL.
  • 7-20-4 — Kurt Kendall recently announced the Spider and Hustler were going into regular production, though there doesn’t seem to be quite as much new stuff coming out of his booth as in years past, which might not be the worst thing as he continues to grow his core lines. — PL.
  • A.J. Fernandez  — Some logical extensions and El Mayimbe. A.J.’s new factory is supposed to be one of the more impressive around. — CM.
  • AKA Cigars — Everyone in Texas knows AKA, everyone outside… Perhaps this is year it changes. — CM.
  • Alec Bradley — Mundial. Space balloon. OK. Maybe Fine and Rare will land back on earth at the 2013 show. — PL.
  • Altadis — The rebranding of several lines continues, as SLR Gen2 gets its formal debut alongside the H. Upmann Legacy, a bit of a carryover from last year’s reups that featured the Romeo & Julieta ROMEO line, the Montecristo EPIC and the Trinidad Paradox. I commend the effort, but it still just feels like more darts being thrown at the wall from another big company trying to find ways to be relevant to the next generation of cigar smokers. — PL.
  • Antillian Cigar Corp. — Sosa’s new Underground Connecticut line looks interesting, real interesting. — CM.
  • Arandoza Cigars — (Crickets) — HW.
  • Arturo Fuente — This is Destino. This year much of the industry had packaging issues, last year, Fuente had a lot of trouble in the department. When people ask what’s the best new cigar at the trade show, my early answer is Destino al Siglo. To be fair, the cigar was shown off last year, although not given out, which will likely be the case this year, sadly. — CM.
  • Arsen — Patrick wants to know if they’ll be here. — CM.
  • Ashton — Another year, another new San Cristobal/La Aroma de Cuba. ESG 24 could be fun, if it’s in Vegas. — CM.
  • Asylum — I’m not sure I could have pegged this as Christian Eiroa’s most popular brand a year ago, every shop I talk to seems to think it is. — CM.
  • AVO — Last time we were here Mr. Uvezian held a Digger. No clue what’s going on here. — CM.
  • Berger & Argenti — It’s been a quiet year for them and there were some less than kind rumors floating around; they’ve got eight booth spaces this year, the question is do they have something that will get them back on people’s radars? — PL.
  • Boveda — 62% is here. — CM.
  • C & C Cigars — Another company that seems to have gone real quiet, albeit, not in the aforementioned way. — CM.
  • Camacho — Bold is back. Camacho seems to be operating like NFL Films, no budget. Dallas is onboard with the company, now let’s see what the rest of the world thinks.  — CM.
  • Casa Fernandez — 35th anniversary. Cake time. — CM.
  • Chinnock Cellars — Brian Chinnock will be introducing Pressoir, the third cigar to join his portfolio and a departure from El Titan de Bronze. — PL.
  • CLE/Tabacaleras Unidas — Christian’s booth is like 18 feet high, too bad Fuente’s booth has a roof on it.
  • Cremo — I wonder who is distributing them. — CM.
  • Crowned Heads — A sampler, a new line, another limited edition coming. — CM.
  • Curivari — Curivari is the most difficult company in the world to get ahold of, period. — CM.
  • Davidoff — They’re also tied for largest space at IPCPR, as they and General Cigar have 60 booth spaces each. Word all year has been that they are going to be releasing a ton of new cigars, and with Davidoff Nicaraguan and the Masters Edition Club House Toro on the radar as well as the Year of the Horse for late 2013, it figures to be a long tour to see all the new stuff. Plus year two for the Golden Band Awards, and possibly another celebrity surprise after Ron White and Mike Ditka the past two years?  — PL.
  • Dignity — Something new, maybe some new retailers. — CM.
  • Dona Flor — I wish I knew how to do the accent thingy. — CM.
  • Drew Estate — Steve Saka will be all the talk, but Drew Estate has four new products, all of them should be massive hits. Somehow, this might be the company’s best show ever. — CM.
  • E.P. Carrillo — E—Stunner. Not sure what to make of the name, other than it’s unique. Beyond that, INCH gets a 70 ring gauge version and the New Wave Connecticut line expands with Selectos de Oro, a 6 1/2 x 43 vitola. The Perez—Carrillo line that was talked about in January has been pushed back to 2014, however.  — PL.
  • Elogio Cigars — Two new ultra—limited releases, as in, less than 5,000 sticks produced. I’m a fan of their regular production cigars, so I’m certainly interested in these. — PL
  • Emilio Cigars — Last year it was an RV in the parking lot of the Orlando Convention Center. This year, it’s two booth spaces for Gary Griffith’s lines and in theory all the brands he distributes, Several of the brands they distribute will have their own spaces, but it will be interesting to see how the House of Emilio brings it all together. — PL.
  • Epicurean Cigars — Nothing new at the show, something new coming. — CM.
  • Erez Cigars — And the award for worst naming in the cigar industry goes to… — CM.
  • Espinosa Cigars — Lots going on here, but it will be more interesting to get a better sense of what else is going on at La Zona.
  • Esteban Carreras — As a follow—up to last year’s releases, the Chupa Cabra and Covenant lines are getting maduro versions this year. — PL.
  • Father & Son Cigars — Rolando Reyes, Jr. is updating the Mutineer brand with a Cameroon wrapped version called the White, though he hasn’t hinted at any other new projects. Interesting for some retailers and consumers, totally off the radar for others. — PL.
  • General Cigar Company — They’re tied with Davidoff for largest presence at the show, as each has 60 booth spaces. — PL.
  • Gran Habano — George Rico’s latest cigar will have a very familiar looking band to fans of Cuban cigars. Will it taste as good? — PL
  • Graycliff Cigar Company — A very quiet year for them leading up to IPCPR and a real lack of presence in the online world leads me to wonder if they’re beginning to become irrelevant? — PL
  • Guayacan Cigars — One of the sleeper hits of the 2012 show, so much so that they’re now being distributed by House of Emilio. I wonder if they missed an opportunity to really build the brand over the past year and may be trying to capture magic in a bottle again. — PL.
  • Gurkha — The Cellar Reserve Limitada has already been announced, and the company sent out a handful of unnamed cigars as a preview of the next addition to the East India Trading Company line. Some companies really exemplify the idea of unveiling “new” products at the show; Gurkha is one of them. And they purchased Martin Family of Cigars, so that will be another thing to talk about.  — PL.
  • Herrera — Frank Herrera is working on a new blend called Herrera Irony as a follow—up to last year’s Herrera Biography, which he says continues to pick up steam. — PL.
  • Iconic Leaf Cigar Co. — Lots of buzz going into last year’s show but not quite as much coming out. Their debut came with a ton of facings; maybe this year comes with a bit more focus? — PL.
  • Illusione — There will be new cigars and one of the hottest releases of the year in Dion’s booth this year, and maybe some vintage couches. — CM.
  • J. Fuego — A relatively quiet year for Jesus, as he rolls out a 5 ½ x 60 vitola in the Origen and Origen Maduro lines, the formal unveil of the Connoisseur line and a new ashtray. After a year that saw him drop two lines and two sizes from his entire catalog, plus redo the bands and packaging as well as rename the company, this could be the launch of J. Fuego 2.0 more than anything. — PL.
  • Jameson Cigar Co. — Brad Mayo surprises us with a last minute Lancero, say what? — CM.
  • J.C. Newman — Tons of new product, don’t be fooled, new Diamond Crown. — CM.
  • Joya de Nicaragua — While this is a major anniversary, Joya will celebrate it later in the year. — CM.
  • Kelner Boutique Factory — Hendrik Kelner, Jr. and his Smoking Jacket cigar will debut in the Davidoff space, as they’re handling distribution for him. Figures to be a legit contender for best new cigar of the show. — PL.
  • Kristoff — There will be lots of new cigars on display here, as the Galerones line contains a total of 16 offerings between all the sizes and blends, as well as the limited release 685 Woodlawn. Glen Case has been steadily evolving his company into a new look and a new portfolio of offerings. This could be an interesting point in their history. — PL.
  • Kuuts, LLC — Time to stop by so we can figure out to write here for next year. — CM.
  • L’Atelier — Always a fun time. Animal Cracker. — CM.
  • La Aurora — Puro Vintage 05 ain’t cheap. — CM.
  • La Flor Dominicana — LFD is LFD. Lots of “surprises” that no one is surprised by. Presumably, a bunch of good cigars. — CM.
  • La Palina — While their new releases won’t be the splashiest to hit the trade show floor, La Palina will have their share of things to talk about, including Mr. Sam, the La Palina Maduro 40 and three new sizes of the La Palina Classic, and this is all coming off the release of the Goldie No.5. They won’t set the show floor on fire, but I expect to see them in more humidors this fall. — PL.
  • Leccia Tobacco — More Black and White coming. — CM.
  • Martin Family of Cigars — they gone. Update: they gone to Gurkha. — PL.
  • Miami Cigar & Co. — K-I-L-O. I’m waiting. — CM.
  • My Father Cigars — 10 year anniversary. The new El Centurion. Should be a festive week for the Garcias, both on and off the trade show floor. — PL.
  • Nat Sherman — The new 1930 will be on display as will Sterling, which was announced the week before the show as their portfolio continues to grow. Can retailers’ humidors keep up? — PL.
  • Nomad Cigar Company — It’s off to Nicaragua for Fred Rewey by way of A.J. Fernandez. Nomad is among the newer brands in the House of Emilio portfolio so I imagine this will be the first time a lot of retailers have a chance to try the product. — CM.
  • Ocean State — Hopefully the Lancero has gotten better. — CM.
  • Oliva — The Serie V Melanio Maduro was pushed back from Father’s Day to the trade show, so that figures to be the highlight of this booth, though the addition of Ernesto Padilla should make it a bit more crowded than in years past. — PL.
  • Oliveros — They’ve already announced a number of projects slated for release around show time, and Aging Room seems to be driving the discussions about them right now. — PL.
  • Ortega Premium Cigars, Inc. — Eddie Ortega won’t be showing off any new products, saying that he is pushing back a project tentatively scheduled for the show to the end of the year. He also won’t even be talking about the Wild Bunch as he can’t take on any more retailers for that project. What he will be focusing on is opening up new retailers for his Serie D lines and the return of Cubao. — PL.
  • Padilla — They will be part of Oliva’s booth this year, a bit of a surprise given their significant booth space in 2012 but also fitting given their distribution relationship. Padilla Vintage is the one thing that has been mentioned as being new, though some other projects may show up. — PL.
  • Padrón — They’re likely saving the big releases for next year, as it will be the 50th anniversary of the company. As of pre—show announcements, all that had been announced was the 1926 Serie four—packs that present the No. 1, No. 9, No. 2 and No. 6 vitolas in one package and will be available in both natural and maduro versions. While it may be a quiet year, expect big things next year.. — PL.
  • Paul Garmirian — No one brings “new” “old” cigars like PG. — CM.
  • PDR Cigars — The company is putting out a pair of cigars, the AFR—75 and A. Flores Gran Reserva, while also having a presence at Kristoff’s booth with the Galerones line and El Primer Mundo thanks to the Costa Fuerte. They are also working on a project with Eddie Ortega, and if recent trends are any indicator, will be brokering some deals to make cigars for other companies in the near future, as they continue to be one of the most in—demand factories in the business. — PL.
  • Perdomo — Champagne Sun Grown figures to be the most interesting, though a new size in the 20th Anniversary will also command attention. Three new lines of Minis round out their debuts. While not the most flashy brand, they’re selling tons of cigars…make no mistake about it. — PL.
  • Primer Mundo — Now part of the PDR Cigars family, with Sean Williams as the Director of Sales for PDR. I’m interested to see where this one goes, mainly because PDR has been such a rising star in their own right and when it comes to making cigars for others. — PL.
  • Prometheus — Will Keith Park let us hold a humidor this year? How many espresssos will Brooks drink in his booth. — CM.
  • Reinado — A sleeper last year, stop by this booth. There. I said it. — CM.
  • Regius — Inside SAG Imports, two new cigars for Mitchell Orchant, the retailer. — CM.
  • Rocky Patel — They were throwing a football around the other day. — CM.
  • Rodrigo — Nothing new apparently. Solid offerings, so why fix what ain’t broke. — CM.
  • RoMa Craft Tobac — Skip brought Diplomatico. In case you want to find Charlie during the show. — PL.
  • Room101 Brand — Master Collection boxes lived up to the hype. — CM.
  • Royal Gold — aka Swisher’s re—entry into the premium cigar market. Only lighting one up will answer most questions. — PL.
  • SAG Imports — Not the most interesting show, but you have to support a company supporting Coronas. Next up, Culebras. I kid. — CM.
  • Sindicato Cigar Group — One of the more interesting story lines, as over 40 store owners representing more than 200 stores have come together to release a trio of new lines and truly blur the line between manufacturer and retailer. They brought in Jim Colucci, the former head of Altadis USA to run the operation, and are seeking to be in 1,000 stores by the end of IPCPR. While there may not be lots of out loud grumbling about this venture by manufacturers, you have to think there will be lots of side conversations about it. — PL.
  • Table 36 — Umm. — CM.
  • Tarazona — Seems to do well in the shops it’s in. That’s called trending up.
  • Tatuaje — Much like what will be happening at the nearby My Father Cigars booth, there will be lots of focus on their ten year anniversary. Should get a look at the new Monster Series, plus Pete is always good for a surprise or two. — PL.
  • Tiant Cigar Group — Should be a quiet year here, as there are no plans to for new releases. Hopefully retailers check this out, as I always thought these Pepin—made cigars were vastly underrated. — PL.
  • Toraño — Several new projects, and Sam Leccia is back. Plus they’ll now have Palio. Could be one of the busier booths this year, or if nothing less one of the more crowded. — PL.
  • Viaje — Who knows with Viaje anymore? I’d be more interested to see what conversations get turned into cigars in the next two years. The Stuffed Turkey was a trade show floor discussion, as was the current size for Summerfest. Got an idea? Bring it to Andre Farkas and he might just turn it into a cigar. — PL.
  • Villiger — 125th Anniversary is their headliner…beyond that, can they keep getting traction into more humidors? — PL.
  • Viva Republica — Another one of those companies worth stopping by. — CM.
  • XIKAR — They’ve officially announced that they are done on the cigar side, meaning the focus returns to accessories, but that’s a side they’ve been tight—lipped on. Other than the news that the Element is getting an upgrade and reemerging as the ELX, nothing has been talked about. There’s chatter of a new humidification product that could disrupt the status quo, so I’ll be looking to see if it lives up to the hype. — PL.
  • Zino — I don’t know anymore. — CM.

About the author

I am an editor and co-founder of halfwheel.com/Rueda Media, LLC. I previously co-founded and published TheCigarFeed, one of the two predecessors of halfwheel. I handle the editing of our written content, the majority of the technical aspects of the site and work with the rest of our staff on content management, business development and more. I’ve lived in most corners of the country and now entering my second stint in Dallas, Texas. I enjoy boxing, headphones, the Le Mans 24-hour, wearing sweatshirts year-round and gyros. echte liebe.
