Illinois is one step closer to become the sixth state to require individuals to be at least 21 to purchase tobacco.

Yesterday the state’s Senate voted 35-20 to increase the minimum age to purchase tobacco products—which would also include e-cigarettes and vapor products—from 18 to 21.

The move now goes to the Illinois House. Over a dozen Illinois cities, including Chicago, have raised the minimum age to purchase to 21.

CaliforniaHawaiiMaine, New Jersey and Oregon have all raised the minimum age to purchase tobacco products to 21-years-old.
