Hoffman Estates, Ill. Enacts Tobacco 21 Ordinance
The Chicago suburb of Hoffman Estates has joined the Tobacco 21 campaign as the village’s Board of Trustees approved the proposal at its Nov. 5 meeting.
The ordinance also makes it illegal for a person under 21-years-old to possess or use tobacco products or alternatives such as e-cigarettes. Both the sale of tobacco to a person under 21 as well as the possession of tobacco by a person under 21 come with fines of $250.
Since Chicago passed its Tobacco 21 ordinance in March 2016, a number of other cities in the surrounding area have joined the Tobacco 21 movement, including Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove Village, Vernon Hills, Aurora and Wheaton. A statewide increase was vetoed by Gov. Bruce Rauner in August, however.
The ordinance is to go into effect immediately upon passage and approval.
Hoffman Estates is home to approximately 52,000 residents.
