Hampton, N.H. Voters Get Second Crack at Parks & Beach Smoking Ban

Last year, residents of Hampton, N.H. voted 1,806 to 787 in favor of a ban on smoking at the town’s beaches and parks. Despite the overwhelming support for the proposed law, the law never became law.

Due to language within the law, it was deemed unenforceable. Yesterday, the Hampton selectman voted 3-0, with one absence and one abstention, to once again send the proposal to the citizens. In March 2019, residents will have the opportunity to once again vote for a smoking ban.

Fines for violating the proposed law, which bans smoking at public parks, beaches and other public spaces, will be set at $100, $150 and $200 for each offense.

Hampton is home to approximately 15,000 residents.
