The second full line from German Engineered Cigars is beginning to arrive on store shelves, as the company has begun to ship Raumzeit.

The cigars were shown off at the 2022 Tobacco Plus Expo (TPE) in January and had been slated to ship shortly after that event concluded. However, the company decided to age them a bit longer to improve the cigars, then a shipment with all the bands and barcode stickers were lost and had to be reprinted. Shipping delays of the cigars from the factory in Nicaragua to the company’s U.S. warehouse also took longer to arrive than initially scheduled.

“It all added up,” Oliver Nickels, co-founder and chief cigar engineer told halfwheel. “Some over-optimistic German engineers made a schedule, we will be much more careful next time.”

The Raumzeit, which gets its name from the German word for spacetime, uses a Nicaraguan-grown Connecticut seed wrapper, an Indonesian Sumatra binder, and a filler that contains tobacco from Nicaragua’s Jalapa region as well as Dominican-grown piloto. The company says the body is mild to medium and is highlighted by the aromatic experience, calling it “traveling at the speed of light, far beyond the next galaxy, while a friendly android serves cake.”

The blend was developed as part of collaboration between German Engineered Cigars and Claudio Sgroi, the former president and master blender of Mombacho Cigars S.A. The Raumzeit line is produced at Tabacalera Tambor in Estelí, and is offered in three regular production sizes:

  • Raumzeit Half Corona (3 1/2 x 44) — $6.50
  • Raumzeit Robusto (5 x 54) — $11
  • Raumzeit Gran Toro (6 x 58) — $12

The Robusto and Gran Toro vitolas are offered in 20-count bundles or boxes, while the Half Corona is available in a five-count bundle.

The company is also releasing a small amount of two other vitolas, a 7 x 40 lancero and a 4 x 50 short robusto, both priced at $10 and offered in 10-count bundles.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
