Nearly the entire General Cigar Co. portfolio will be getting more expensive, as the company has informed retailers that it will be implementing a price increase.

The company has not specified the amount of the increase or how it is being rolled out across its extensive portfolio that includes Macanudo, Cohiba, CAO, La Gloria Cubana, Diesel Hoyo de Monterrey, Punch and Partagas among others, but nearly every brand is seeing an increase. Some notable exceptions to that are the following lines that have come out in recent months:

  • Hoyo Epicure Seleccion
  • La Gloria Cubana Serie R Esteli
  • La Gloria Cubana Serie R Esteli Maduro
  • Punch Knuckle Buster
  • Diesel Esteli Puro
  • CAO Bones

Additionally, some lines such as the CAO Steel Horse and CAO Consigliere are seeing increases to certain vitolas but not all sizes in a line.

In a letter to retailers, Régis Broersma did not point to a specific cause for the increase, though such increases are fairly common in the cigar industry as the costs of raw materials increases, along with other factors such as labor, shipping costs, regulatory fees and other expenses.

The increases went into effect on Jan. 11.

The following chart is a live look at what companies have announced price increases or no price increase for 2021.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
