Yesterday, the East Lansing City Council banned smoking at city parks, recreational facilities and plazas.

The new ordinance creates a fine no more than $100 for a first violation and $500 for any subsequent violation.

It will also ban smoking in parking lots when they are used for “community events” and ban smoking within 50 feet of the door of any building owned by the city.

East Lansing is located in Clinton and Ingham Counties. It has a population of approximately 50,000 and is home to Michigan State University.
