While the 2020 edition of HOME from Dissident Cigars wasn’t due to begin shipping until next month, the company has announced that it will begin shipping a partial allocation this week as a way to support the brand’s retailers through the COVID-19 pandemic.

It will be a small amount—just 50 boxes—but Ben Holt, owner of Dissident, said he wanted to do something to help retailers who may be struggling with the effects of the outbreak.  “Many of our retail partners are feeling the pinch this situation has created and I want to do what I can to help them out,” Holt said via a press release “They are the bread and butter that make this industry function. I know it’s not much, but I hope this might help give them some kind of boost until this situation passes over. They have employees and bills to pay and families to support. I want to do what I can to help. I want to encourage consumers to keep supporting their shops during this time.”

The initial allocation will be sent to the following retailers:

  • 2nd Street Cigar Co. (Edmond, Okla.)
  • Blue Havana Cigar Shop & Lounge (Chicago, Ill.)
  • BnB Cigars (Philadelphia, Pa.)
  • Caravan Cigar Co. (Bath, Pa.)
  • Cigar Art (Dallas, Texas)
  • Cigar Federation
  • The Cigar Merchant (Lafayette, La.)
  • Cigar Shenanigans Cigar & Cocktail Lounge (North Conway, NH)
  • Hearth Cigars & Pipe (Omaha, NE)
  • The Hemingway (Midland, Texas)
  • The Hemingway (Odessa, Texas)
  • Knights Cigar Lounge (West Hartford, Conn.)
  • Low Country Pipe & Cigar (Little River, S.C.)
  • Omerta Cigar Co. (Oklahoma City, Okla.)
  • Redland Cigar Co. (San Antonio, Texas)
  • Skallywag Cigars (Scottsdale, Ariz.)
  • Smoker’s Abbey (Nashville, Tenn.)
  • Smoker’s Abbey Austin (Cedar Park, Texas)
  • Smoker’s Haven (Lubbock, Texas)
  • Stateline Cigar Outlet (New Castle, Del.)
  • TinderBox Haverford (Haverford, Pa.)
  • The Train Car (Big Spring, Texas)
  • Underground Cigar Shop & Lounge (Fort Worth, Texas)

Holt reintroduced the Dissident HOME in 2019, updating the blend from its previous incarnation as a Honduran puro to use a dual wrapper of Ecuadorian maduro and corojo leaves over an Ecuadorian binder and Nicaraguan filler, crafted at Fabrica Oveja Negra in Estelí, Nicaragua. The 2019 version was offered in a 6 x 54 box pressed toro, priced at $14 and offered in 20-count boxes. It began shipping in September 2019. The 2020 version retains the same size and blend.

Holt said he will ship the remaining cigars to all of its qualifying retail partners in April. Production numbers are not being disclosed.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
