The second cigar in Diesel’s Fool’s Errand trilogy will be on store shelves next month, and it will be called Simple Fool.

Simple Fool is a 5 x 58 tapered perfecto that uses an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper and a blend of proprietary tobaccos cultivated by AJ Fernandez in several of Nicaragua’s growing regions. The binder and filler tobaccos are all Nicaraguan habano leaves, with the blend drawing on a number of primings to give the cigar its profile, which is described as being full-bodied and highlighted by espresso, earth and spice notes that get balanced by a rich creaminess.

The blend was developed by Justin Andrews, business development manager of Scandinavian Tobacco Group’s (STG) North American Branded and Rest of World divisions, along with Abdel Fernandez, who is producing the cigar at his Tabacalera AJ Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua S.A. factory in Estelí.

“There is nothing foolish about simplicity and this cigar echoes what AJ and I believe to be true about life in general: that less can often be more,” Andrews said in a press release. “Think about the aroma you smell when you first open a box of cigars. Or a relaxing place to unwind with a great smoke. These are simple things that mean a lot. Simple Fool is no different. This cigar exercises restraint beautifully with proprietary, full-bodied tobaccos blended to perfection. Nothing more, nothing less.”

The release will also introduce the Simple Fool character, which will be featured on a collectible tarot card inside the box. That card will contain a QR code that will take consumers to an interactive game that invites them to complete the Simple Fool’s errand by solving a series of riddles. Ten participants will randomly win prizes for playing the game.

Simple Fool will ship to retailers on March 6, priced at $9.99 per cigar and offered in 10-count boxes. Diesel is distributed by STG’s Forged Cigar Co.

“A simple fool is still a fool yet a wise person thinks ahead,” Andrews said. “Wise cigar smokers among us will put the Simple Fool tarot card in a safe place for safe keeping…”

The Diesel Fool’s Errand line debuted in 2022 with the Stubborn Fool, which also came with an interactive game similar to the one being created for the Simple Fool release. The third and final cigar in the Diesel Fool’s Errand series is slated for release in Spring 2024.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
