Davidoff’s The Master Selection is getting a new installment, as this morning the company announced that The Master Selection 2014 will be released this Thursday, September 1.

It uses a Dominican wrapper, Ecuadorian 702 binder, and Dominican fillers, including piloto ligero and visus, hybrid olor, and San Vicente ligero, visus and seco. The company calls it a medium strength blend highlighted by oak, fresh spice and leather, and notes that the cigars were rolled two years ago.

Like the other releases in the line, it is a 6 x 52 toro, and comes with an MSRP of $35 per cigar and $350 for a box of 10 cigars. It will launch via Davidoff’s online store, its Davidoff of Geneva — since 1911 retail stores, and other Davidoff appointed merchants. Based on images of the box, production is being limited to 2,500 boxes.

The Master Selection line debuted in 2017 and is based on a series of cigars that Eladio Diaz, the company’s former master blender and quality control chief, made for himself every year for his birthday. Those cigars weren’t sold at the time, but rather were smoked for his own personal enjoyment and shared with friends and family. Among those who smoked them, they became known for being stronger and quite different from the typical profile of Davidoff cigars being released to retail at the time.

While there was a range of about 15 years that these cigars were produced, only six were released at the time:

  • Davidoff The Master Selection Series 2013 (6 x 52) — June 2017
  • Davidoff The Master Selection Series 2016 (6 x 52) — June 2017
  • Davidoff The Master Selection Series 2010 (6 x 52) — August 2017
  • Davidoff The Master Selection Series 2011 (6 x 52) — August 2017
  • Davidoff The Master Selection Series 2007 (6 x 52) — September 2017
  • Davidoff The Master Selection Series 2008 (6 x 52) — September 2017

Diaz left Davidoff and Tabadom Holding Inc. in 2021 after 35 years, and has since go on to open his own cigar factory, Tabacalera Diaz Cabrera, that is producing cigars for several clients.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
