While the rest of 2021 will be about adding new sizes to its existing 1880 lines, for Casa Turrent, the first half of 2022 will be about adding three new lines to the series. The company has announced plans to add the 1880 Doble Maduro, 1880 Doble Claro and 1880 Rosado, all of which are Mexican puros that use tobacco grown by the Turrent family.

The 1880 Doble Claro, the lightest of the three lines, uses a Connecticut seed wrapper, a San Andrés Negro binder, and a filler that uses San Andrés habano criollo and Negro tobaccos, to create what a spokesman for the company called a very smooth cigar. The Rosado gets a habano wrapper, a habano 2000 binder, and San Andrés habano criollo fillers, and its habano-forward blend offering a higher strength level and more distinguished flavors. The fuller body 1880 Doble Maduro uses San Andrés Negro for the wrapper, binder and filler, with a strong taste profile and what are described as “very contrasting notes.”

All three lines will get the same five sizes, which will be released one per month for the first five months of the new year:

  • January: Short Robusto (4 3/4 x 52) — $13.80 (Box of 10, $138)
  • February: Perfecto (5 1/2 x 54) — $16.60 (Box of 10, $166)
  • March: Robusto (5 1/4 x 55) — $16.20 (Box of 10, $162)
  • April: Lancero (7 1/2 x 40) — $16.80 (Box of 10, $168)
  • May: Doble Robusto (6 1/2 x 55) — $20 (Box of 10, $200)

Each blend will be limited to a total of 10,000 boxes in 2022, with production happening at Casa Turrent’s factory in San Andrés Tuxtla, Mexico.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
