On Thursday, Casa Cuevas Cigars announced that Alec Cuevas has been named the company’s new director of operations.

Alec is the son of the company’s president, Luis Cuevas Jr., and grandson of Master Blender Luis Cuevas Sr. He is now the fifth generation of the Cuevas family to join the business, something that was noted on the release of the company Casa Cuevas Reserva line in 2019. The updated packaging added a fourth coin and a fifth star to the company’s logo; the coin features the United States flag while the star represents the fifth generation of the Cuevas family to be in the business, both are a nod to Alec.

The younger Cuevas grew up around tobacco, according to a press release. The Miami native spent his summers in the Dominican Republic at the Cuevas’s Las Lavas cigar factory. It was his grandfather who gave him his first cigar during a new year’s eve celebration when he was 17 years old.

“I couldn’t finish it but smoking my very first cigar with my father and grandfather during that New Year’s Eve celebration was one of my most memorable moments in my life,” Alec recalled.

While he was a student at Florida International University, he worked in retail at Neptune Cigar in Miami, something he says he did to be able to smoked every cigar he could get his hands on and thus develop his palate with the intention of one day joining the family business.

“My father has created a culture, that makes the Casa Cuevas Cigar brand unique,” Alec said. “Our motto ‘we make cigars from our casa, to yours’ is because cigars unify people from different backgrounds, job positions, and the like. My father, grandfather and I have an immense adoration for what we create, and an immense admiration for other wonderful brands within the industry of tobacco. I am proud to join my father and grandfather and look forward to help the Casa Cuevas Cigar brand grow.”

“My father and I couldn’t be prouder of Alec,” said Luis Cuevas Jr. in a press release. “The Casa Cuevas Cigar brand is first and foremost a family business and we look forward to watching Alec grow with us.”

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
