On Tuesday, voters in Carbondale overwhelmingly approved a proposal that will raise the tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products this summer, with 70.8 percent of voters supporting the measure.

As of July 1, the town will begin taxing non-cigarette tobacco products such as cigars and e-cigarettes at a rate of 40 percent of the sales price, while cigarettes will be taxed at a rate of four dollars per pack. The town estimates that the taxes will raise upwards of $700,000 annually, which will be directed towards tobacco cessation and prevention efforts as well as sales enforcement and education. The mayor has said that the number is likely high, as cities and towns are required to tell voters how much they expect to raise, going for an upper limit as the projection.

Carbondale is located approximately 170 miles west of Denver and is home to just under 7,000 residents.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
