Rather than trying to pass and enforce a law against smoking, the Bremerton Parks and Recreation Commission voted in favor of a voluntary smoking ban for the city’s public parks.

While the Commission has not finalized the details, it’s expected that no-smoking signs will be added to the park and those who refuse to stop smoking in parks could ultimately be kicked out of the park, although it’s unclear how that would happen given the measure is not technically a law.

The cost and effectiveness of enforcement were listed as reasons why Bremerton opted for this measure instead of a law.  Bremerton is located in western Washington in Kitsap County. It is home to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and has a population around 40,000.
