Bond Roberts Cigars, a collaborative project between different international cigar retailers, has announced that it expects to begin shipping its first cigar to stores next month. While Bond Roberts is best known as an online cigar auction platform where people can buy and sell Cuban cigars via online auctions, the company has been working on offering its own cigars.
The first is the Bond Roberts Línea D No.06, a 5 7/8 x 50 cigar that has a 109-style cap, a hybrid between the typical round cap of a parejo and the pointed tip of a belicoso. It uses a Honduran wrapper, a Honduran binder and fillers from Honduras and Nicaragua. The blend was created by Hamlet Paredes, who works for Bond Roberts, and production is handled by Oscar Valladares Tobacco & Co. in Honduras.
It will have an MSRP of $16 per cigar, it will be sold in boxes of 50. These cigars were previewed at events earlier this year but won’t begin shipping to retail stores until mid-August.
“My familiarity with Nicaraguan and Honduran tobacco was essential to this project,” said Paredes in a press release. “Despite working with the best Cuban tobacco, which to me is very special, I can generalize and say that Nicaraguan tobacco is stronger than Honduran tobacco, while Honduran tobacco is, again generally, sweeter, softer, more aromatic, and closest to Cuban tobacco. Both Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos dance beautifully when they come together in the right way. I speak generally, of course, as tobacco will take characteristics not only from countries but from individual farms, regions within the farm, and the way they are treated throughout the fermentation process.”
A second size, the Bond Roberts 109 (7 1/4 x 50), is scheduled to begin shipping in October.
“Since our launch events earlier this year, the response to the Petit 109 and 109 has been overwhelming,” said Rob Ayala, CEO of Bond Roberts. “With such a fantastic product, a brilliant team, global distribution in place, and a worldwide army of Bond Roberts zealots, I cannot wait for the official release date. I am so proud of Hamlet Paredes, Oscar Valladares, and Angel Miranda Battle, who has done a fantastic job with the brand’s artwork.”
The company says that it plans to have two lines of cigars and up to 15 sizes over the next three years.
Bond Roberts was founded by the owners of J.J. Fox, the Dublin, Ireland-based retailer, and Friends of Habanos, an online forum and store based in Australia. J.J. Fox will handle distribution in the U.K., while COH Cigars—a Hong Kong-based retailer—will handle distribution for Asia and the rest of Europe.
