The borough of Bloomingdale has raised the minimum age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21.

The new law will go into effect on Sept 1. It is joined by another new tobacco-related measure, businesses that sell e-cigarettes will be required to have a new $250 license.

It was not without controversy, according to NorthJersey.com Councilman Ray Yazdi argued that many affected by the law would just go down the road to purchase tobacco products, something that would hurt the township’s tax revenue.

Bloomingdale is located in Passaic County, about 25 miles west of Manhattan. It has a population over 8,000.
