The Black Works Studio Hyena is coming back to store shelves this month, as Black label Trading Co. has announced that it will be shipping the second release to stores in the U.S., Belgium and Germany this month.

The cigar returns with the same blend as the original, featuring a Cameroon wrapper, Nicaraguan habano wrapper and Nicaraguan fillers. The inspiration for the blend, and particularly the use of an African-grown wrapper, came from the years that James and Angela Brown lived in Africa.

“Hyena received a lot of hype in 2021 and this year’s release will be no different,” said James Brown, creator of Black Label Trading Co. and Black Works Studio, as well as owner of Fabrica Oveja Negra in Estelí, Nicaragua. “The 2022 Hyena is bold, spicy, very well balance and a touch more intense than last year’s release. A truly unique cigar that is focused on showcasing a perfect balance between Nicaraguan fillers and the Cameroon wrapper.”

Brown called the profile “spice forward with white pepper and semi-sweet baking spices blended with herbal notes & cedar, while the finish is marked by a blend of bitter cocoa, cream & malt.

The Black Works Studio Hyena will once again be available in two sizes:

The company is producing 800 boxes of each size, an increase from the 700 boxes of each size that were produced for the debut release.

Black Works Studio is a part of the Oveja Negra Brands portfolio that showcases the talent, technique and tobacco of Fabrica Oveja Negra.

Update — The company confirmed production numbers for this year’s release, and they have been added to the story.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
