Black Label Trading Company has announced the formation and launch of a new cigar factory called Fabrica de Oveja Negra in Esteli, Nicaragua, which is being opened with a complete focus on small batch premium cigars.

The factory officially started production on February 9 and is currently working on its first batch of Black Label Trading Company cigars.

“Starting our own factory was a natural progression of the brand, we needed the freedom to be as creative as possible and to have ownership of every process that goes into making our cigars,” said James Brown, creator of Black Label Trading Company, via a press release “We have always been involved in every aspect of our production but now we can take it to the next level and ensure 100% quality from seed to ash,” he added.

In a press release issued by Black Label Trading Company, Oveja Negra, which translates as Black Sheep, will be a place where smaller brands and retailers wanting private labels can make a cigar without huge minimum orders, since small batch production will be the norm. The factory is starting with four rolling pairs and estimates to have a production capacity of 30,000 cigars per month. Each team’s daily production is being limited to 200-250 cigars in an effort to maintain quality.

“This is a tough industry for small companies,” Brown noted, adding that it’s hard for smaller brands to get the attention they need to create a premium product. “Our goal is to help support other boutique brands and grow the premium-cigar market,” he said.

With the announcement of the new factory Black Label Trading Company has moved all of its production to the Oveja Negra factory. Tabacalera Santiago de Nicaragua had been responsible for making the company’s cigars to this point. The company expects to be making announcements in the near future about additional brands utilizing Oveja Negra’s services.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
