Benji Menendez to Retire

Benjamin “Benji” Menendez will be retiring a the end of year. According to a report from A Cigar Smoker’s Journal, the 77-year-old who is serving as General Cigar Co.’s senior vice-president of premium cigars has decided to leave the industry after over six decades in the business.

Menendez was born in Havana and began his career in the cigar business in Cuba alongside his father, the managing partner of Menendez, Garcia y Cia., owners of the H. Upmann factory and makers of Montecristo. Menendez left Cuba in 1960 and would work for both General Cigar Co. and Altadis USA, as well as Phillip Morris.

In 2009, his eponymous cigars debuted, the Partagas Benji Menendez Master Series in a 6 x 46 size. That cigar, which was limited, returned this year.

A representative for General Cigar Co. did not return a request for comment.
